I GOT THE JOB!!!

It is with excitement and awe that I tell you that I’ve accepted an offer from Clear Channel Radio to work here in Tampa at 970 WFLA AM every weekday morning on “AM Tampa Bay” from 5am until 9am. With the state of radio on shaky ground, I can tell you News/Talk radio is the perfect place for me to start the next phase of my broadcasting career. I will be sitting third chair to two men whose broadcasting careers are the stuff of legend in this business!

Jack Harris has been dominating the Tampa Bay airwaves for decades. Jack has worked the mic for The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, The Tampa Bay Storm, The Outback Bowl, and WLFA for years. At one point Jack’s career took him to Washington D.C. where he worked along side Willard Scott! He’s an American Vet and a really smart man! I plan to have a dictionary handy when Jack throws out the big words.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Harris_(broadcaster)

Tedd Webb bleeds everything that Tampa Bay is. Born and raised in Cigar City, Tedd has been worked as a DJ, Sportscaster, and Talk Show Host during his decades in radio and even worked along side the legendary Scott Shannon and Cleveland Wheeler at the famous “Q Morning Zoo.” Tedd is a quick wit, a survivor and a
fighter, in the nicest sense of the word.

http://www.teddwebb.com/about/index.html

Both Jack and Tedd are award-winning broadcasters and I expect to learn a lot, and laugh a lot, working with them. Our chemistry seems effortless and I have so much respect for the men they are and the work they do at WFLA. In addition to Jack and Tedd, I’ll be working with Producer Ethan Youker and Program Director Steve Versnick. This is a dream team, as far as I’m concerned!

So what am I doing there? Little known fact: I have a degree in Broadcast Journalism and I bring more than 15 years broadcast experience to the table from TV & Radio News Rooms and broadcast studios – the last 9 years of which I’ve spent in Tampa. “AM Tampa Bay” is committed to the issues the residents of Tampa Bay face on a daily basis and will continue to bring you the information you need to make informed decisions in your community and in your life.

I’m humbled by the support I’ve received from so many on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIN and I want you to know how much I appreciate it. I hope you’ll join us weekday mornings on 970 WFLA AM from 5am until 9am. Here are the numbers to call us LIVE:

Hillsborough: 813-990-9352
Pinellas: 727-461-9352
Toll-Free: 800-969-9352

You can listen LIVE every day here: http://www.iheart.com/#/live/2823/?autoplay=true

And I hope you’ll follow us on Facebook so that we can get to know YOU: https://www.facebook.com/#!/AMTampaBay

As a side note, I wanted to let those of you that still need the inspiration and resources I’ve shared in my weekly Blog that I will continue to write for you! TheUPsidetoUnemployment lives on until you don’t need it anymore!
Keep the Faith and tune in tomorrow morning for my first day on “AM Tampa Bay” on 970 WFLA AM!!!

Let's Make A Deal!

Though I’m still unemployed, there is an upside to this adventure: I get to meet people doing interesting things and I’m doing things I’ve never done before! This week, I was able to audition for a Guest Host spot on HSN, based here in Tampa Bay. It was terrifying and challenging and the kind of thing that gets your blood pumping. The hallways were crowded with merchandise and amazing looking food…and it was like being on a movie set with a number of different studios down every hall. I practiced my pitch for an entire day before presenting “on camera“ and I’m pretty happy with how I did! It could be weeks or months before I hear back from them but I’m grateful to friends who helped me get my foot in the door. Personal connections and contacts are everything in this economy and auditioning for a job on TV was a great experience!

Late last week I got word from a TV station in Tampa and a radio station in San Francisco that I didn’t get the job(s). Disappointing, but every interview I go to, every Program Director I talk to, gets me closer to that next job. In fact, station #1 in San Francisco didn’t think I was a fit but gave my resume and demo to station #2 down the hall and we had a very positive conversation. They may be looking to make a change in the next month or so! There are jobs opening up out there, one by one.

Unemployment has definitely become a waiting game. I have a few friends in similar situations to mine in the industry and there is a lot of talk of things that “may” happen. I’ve had colleagues call and email telling me there’s something “coming up” that they want to hire me for. But what’s really going on behind the scenes? I don’t know. I know there are job openings out there. It seems, though, that employers are very slow to pull the trigger. Are they waiting until after the holidays? Is there a hiring freeze until the 1st Quarter of 2012? Are they buying time? Probably. The good news is that I’m seeing many of you reporting new jobs and interviews on Facebook! I’m glad to see that happening before the holidays! And I’m glad I have enough cash to get myself into the next year so that I don’t do anything desperate.

And the big news I’d hoped I could share with you today? I still can’t because a deal is not a deal until all the finer points have been agreed to and the ink is dry. I’ve seen crazy, last minute things happen in this business so I‘m cautiously optimistic. But I can tell you this - I’ve had a couple job offers! I think one, in particular, is a fantastic job opportunity, a great career move for me personally, and I will be very excited to tell you the specifics when the time comes. Until then, I’m still sending out the resumes and talking to all interested parties. You can’t let up when you need a job to pay the bills and you want to work. Until next week, at least, the Champagne is on ice.

Keep The Faith!

What does it take to be successful?

Every week I Blog, and every week there are remarks of support….and detractors who say I’m part of the media spreading a delusion that everything is going to be OK. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion - and keep them coming - but I believe that attitude is everything and a bad attitude never got anyone anywhere.

Things have changed. Everything’s changed actually and I‘m finding a new way to look at things in order to survive. I read a great article in the Huffington Post that instructs that you should no longer be looking for a job, you should be looking for “opportunity!” I think that’s spot-on advice because far too many “jobs” have been eliminated permanently. Just last week hundreds of people in radio where told their job no longer existed!

So how does one go about seeking opportunity? Define your skill set and networking like crazy. Be open to trying new things and start new habits that will make your efforts successful. And it turns out that there are habits that successful people share in common, it’s not simply “luck.”

One of those key traits successful people among us share is that they’re trustworthy. Now, everyone thinks they’re trustworthy but studies show that certain behaviors can tarnish how trustworthy you’re perceived at work. “When you engage in behaviors that are indicative of low self-control, your trustworthiness is diminished. In other words, all those things you know you shouldn’t do – smoking, overeating, impulsive spending, being lazy, late, disorganized, excessively emotional, or having a quick temper – may be even worse for you than you ever realized, because of the collateral damage they are doing to your reputation.” (Forbes.com)

Though even if you’re trusted as I was with hosting two different radio shows at my last “job” that doesn’t guarantee longevity. There’s still the game of survivor to be played! Success doesn’t guarantee a smooth ride to the top. Just like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs you have to cultivate behaviors that will pick you back up after a job loss.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/augustturak/2011/01/04/5-ways-to-cultivate-successful-character-traits/

The other key trait successful people share is passion. In the book Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies; more than 200 successful people were interviewed including Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, Maya Angelou, Steve Forbes, Quincy Jones, and Dalai Lama. Ultimately, these successful people had a passion in their lives that drove them to work hard and endlessly to succeed over a long period of time. Success isn’t instant and patience is hard to come by when you need someone to give you a paycheck. But hopefully by opening your mind to opportunity you will see your options open up as well. Feed your passions and people around you will take notice! I’m connecting with people I would’ve never met had I not lost my job and in turn they’re offering me experiences to do things I would’ve never sought out! I don’t know where this path will lead me but I’m on the way to finding out!

Keep the Faith!

What happens when that employer Googles YOU?!?!

http://theupsidetounemployment.wordpress.com/2011/10/27/what-happens-when-that-employer-googles-you/

Let’s start with the good news: Florida’s Economy got a little giddy-up last month, creating about 23,000 jobs, more than any other state. And Tampa Bay led state metros in hiring for the second month in a row according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Unemployment also fell an iota. Good. I’m happy to see things moving in the right direction, if not quickly enough for my attention span.

For me it’s been almost four months on the sidelines and I can say it’s been one of the busiest times in my life, personally and professionally. House projects that have been on the back-burner for years are all but done: painting, planting, organizing, etc. Cinderella’s got nothing on me! I’m ready for The Ball!! And professionally, I’ve never been sharper or more ready for what’s next.

Laying the groundwork for your next job is something everyone can do, even if you still have a job. It’s a lot easier to get traction if you’ve got a head start. There are plenty of things I wish I’d done ahead of getting that pink slip but I play catch-up quickly!

According to a poll of HR managers creating and crafting your online presence is one of the most important things you can do. In the near future, 40% of HR Managers believe your resume will be replaced by your user profiles on any number of social networking sites: LinkedIN.com, Facebook.com, etc. I see this happening already. Employers are searching me out online and finding my Blog before we even meet. I’m building a website so that I’ll simply have to send prospective employers a link to everything and anything they could want to know about my professional life: My audio/video samples, pictures, my Blog, links to FB and Twitter, etc. When your employer goes to Google you what will they find? It’s time to take control of that.

One thing this whole experience has taught me is that YOU are your biggest cheerleader. I realized that I need to be my own manager and really take control of my career and that means taking control of your image. Even if you’re not in a “high profile” industry, carefully crafting your professional image should be well under your control. Creating a website is easier than you may think and a great way to showcase just how invaluable you are and what you offer. Your website is the place where you can not only tell them who you are…you can SHOW them and it makes a much bigger impact!

Wordpress.com is a great place to create a Blog and it‘s FREE. What are you an expert on? Show them what you’ve got! Show off what you’ve accomplished! My English teachers would be proud to know that I’ve had a lot of good feedback about my writing and it’s bolstered my confidence about another skill I can add to the resume. Websites like Wordpress and LinkedIN are easy to use and you can attach links to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. You can imbed audio and video too! LinkedIN is the perfect place to showcase your professional achievements and make connections in your industry. And while we’re at it, make sure the picture you’re using in your profile is truly representative of that image you’re trying to create. If you have a friend that’s good with a camera ask them for a favor! Fix your hair, put on a little makeup, put on a nice shirt and take great care with everything that you include on your website because people are taking notice.

First impressions still count, and chances are they’re going to get that first impression about you ONLINE.

This week’s Blog was inspired by an article in the October issue of More Magazine which you can read in its entirety here; http://www.more.com/reinvention-money/careers/your-new-job-security-starts-here

Is She Faking it?!?!

http://theupsidetounemployment.wordpress.com/

The short answer is “No!” I was at dinner at a friend’s home last week and she told me that after reading my Blog she had to wonder if I was faking my enthusiasm or positive outlook. And, again, that’s a firm NO!

It’s my belief that most human beings (without medication) are hard wired to be negative. “Psychology has identified this pull towards the dark side as a “negativity bias.” From an evolutionary perspective, human beings have learned that paying attention to the negative is more important than dwelling on the positive. Those whose gene pools encouraged them to ignore predators in favor of stopping to smell the roses have been killed off in favor of a more pragmatic genetic profile”

Source: http://psychologyofwellbeing.com/201006/the-power-of-negative-thinking.html

You have tens of thousands of thoughts that run through your mind each day. And when you’re going through a job loss, a divorce or break up, moving or some other stressful event the only way to cope seems to be to figure out everything that can go wrong and prepare yourself for the worst! Our ancestors must have benefited from a negative outlook when “Outlast, Outlplay, Outwit” truly had meaning.

Certainly I’ve had my bad days. I’ve had sleepless nights in the last three months since I lost my job and days where things felt all but hopeless and I was ready to be sucked into the abyss with the rests of the jobless, underwater homeowners. But this Blog does not mean to say that you should dwell on the negative. I had a boyfriend once who made this an art form - sitting in his room for hours, listening to music and “thinking” about his problems rather than talking to someone and creating a plan to deal with them. It eventually broke apart our relationship because there was nothing productive about it. If you can identify the problem it’s time to do something about it!

So once a week I make sure to give myself this pep talk in the form of a Blog and put away the anxiety for the day to focus on what I know is true: I love what I do, I’m pretty good at it (otherwise I wouldn’t have lasted nearly 2 decades in this business), and there are companies out there that put a premium on hiring talent vs. someone who will do the job cheaply. And all of my hard work seems to be paying off: I’ve been pretty busy with interviews for great jobs in the last few weeks!

Negativity serves a purpose but it can be demoralizing. Being optimistic can be a rush while it lowers stress and anxiety. But you need both the positive and the negative. “In her recent book, The Optimism Bias, neuroscientist Tali Sharot of the Welcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, notes that optimists tend to earn more and live longer, among other benefits. ‘Believing that a goal is attainable motivates us to execute actions that will help us get closer to our dreams,’ she says. ‘This is why optimists are more likely to succeed in academics, sports, and politics.’

So while my chips may be down there’s no where to go but up….so that’s where I’m going. Anybody with me?

Keep the Faith,
Corey Dylan

Are you a quitter? New Blog post today!

EXTRA INNINGS?!

When the Rays clinched a playoff spot last night there were few people left in the bars and the stadium to see it. Sure, it was a weeknight. Yes, they were down 7-0 late in the game but the bases were LOADED and I wasn’t giving up hope. I’m glad I didn’t. That was some of the most exciting baseball I have ever seen and the payoff was pure joy! What in the World did Joe Maddon say to his players that kept them focused and fighting to survive when beating the Yankees seemed impossible? I wish I knew but I’m certain he’s a great motivator. It’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when you’re unemployed especially when you’re trying so hard to land a job but the employers aren’t responding!

You get a lot of question and plenty of unsolicited advice when you’re out of work. Most people are positive and understandably curious. Some are just curious and nosey. Hallmark has even come out with a line of cards aimed at those of us who have recently lost a job!?! Believe me, no one who’s unemployed wants a card to mark the occasion unless it comes with money stuffed inside or a job offer. They don’t want to be asked “did you get a job yet?” But If you have a referral or an experience to share then please do!

I haven’t had an offer yet but I’m keeping up the fight until I hear “no thanks.” I know I would do a great job for any or all of the employers should they give me the chance so the ball is in their court. The first interview went really well. I was told they plan to move slowly and I was left with a “We’ll be in touch.” I really want that job. The second interview ended with the request for references and the promise of a second interview for that job. Yesterday, I had my third interview with a company whose goal is creating a nationally syndicated radio show and it went really, really well! They called me in ahead of an open casting call which I plan to attend too. All three positions are open and everybody’s moving “slow” to hire so I don’t have answers as to their timeline. I’ve sent my “thank you” letters and will start making the follow-up emails/calls today. I want to work!

After yesterday’s interview I went to Panera for a late lunch and witnessed a potential hire getting interviewed for a job there! She was a young woman with a part-time job at Publix looking to work a second job! I watched and tried to hear what was said with great interest! “Why do you want to work for us?” “Describe a situation that was difficult with a customer and how you handled it.” “What job specifically would you prefer to handle?” There was some hesitation in her answers and it reminded me that we all need to ask ourselves these questions before we get to the interview so that we’re prepared when we are asked. By the end of her interview both the employer and the interviewee were smiling and seemed to have created a rapport. What most employers seem to be looking for is genuine interest and ENTHUSIAMS! Give it to them!

Moving from unemployed to a full-time job is a process. I don’t know anyone who’s getting hired on the spot. If you’re looking for work or know someone who is, be patient. Stay positive. And if nothing else, don’t forget to bring enthusiasm to your next job interview!

Keep the faith!

Are you resisting CHANGE? New jobs coming to Tampa Bay paying $50k - $120k!

There’s an old saying, “As Florida goes, so goes the Nation.” Well, right now Floridians are staring down the second highest foreclosure rate in the country (after California) and a stubborn “official” 10.7% unemployment rate. Florida has said goodbye to more than 16,000 government workers in just the last year and that’s just one of our states biggest employers! In the headlines this week we’ve learned hundreds of new jobs are coming to the Sunshine State and the Bay Area but it can’t come quickly enough. Here’s more on when and where you’ll find these jobs that‘ll pay $50,000 to $120,000!:

http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/news/local/hillsborough/time-warner-to-bring-500-jobs-to-bay-area-09202011

http://www.tampabay.com/news/localgovernment/article1192788.ece

Human beings naturally resist change. It’s scary. It’s uncomfortable. Unfortunately we don’t have choice but to “go with the flow“ right now. And something like a job loss almost certainly leads to major change. It might be a lower paying job in your future. It might be a job out of state. It could be the inability to pay your mortgage because you can‘t find work. You have a lot on your plate if you’re unemployed. It’s taken me a couple of slow months just to get three interviews and I‘m hearing the same thing from my fellow job-seekers! But even the friends I have who still have their jobs are struggling to pay their bills. The days of having ONE source of income may be gone and that doesn’t seem “safe” to me anymore.

I’ve been asked in my job interviews “what is it that you want to do?” Right now, I want to do it all: Radio, TV, Video, Writing, Marketing, and Social Media! I’m willing to try new things and put my energy and abilities into a number of areas. It’s exciting, really. My next interview is about a week away and it’s with a company that is having an open casting call but asked me to come in before the open call for an interview and I‘m thrilled! I’d be happy with one or ALL of these jobs. I’m ready to GO so let’s see an offer! Unfortunately, employers aren’t in as big of a hurry to hire as most of us are to work.

Accepting the fact that things have changed is the first step I’ve taken to understand that we all have to look at things differently and create a new plan. That plan will probably include things you never thought you’d do or have to do. And frankly, I don’t want to go back to the way things were. Been there, done that. Dwelling on the fact that things aren’t the way they used to be will hold us all back. However, I’ve made a plan should the day come when I can’t pay the bills. Stressing about it now won’t do me or anyone else any good. The mantra that’s keeping me going right now: Accept Change. Make a plan. Move forward. Oh, and Winston Churchill was smart guy who said, “Never, never, never, never give up.”

Keep the faith!

I've hustled to land 3 job interviews and you can too!

I had hoped once the summer ended, the kids were back in school, and vacations had been taken that the job market would start picking up and the phone would start ringing. And though it took a little longer than I’d hope the phone has started to ring and the emails are starting to ping in my inbox! I now have THREE interviews set up for the next week and I’m thrilled!: The first is with THE Radio Industry Leader, the second is with a TV station in town that’s taken notice of my Social Networking (smart company!), and the third is with a big Marketing/Ad Agency in town that’s putting together a radio/video show that sounds like a BLAST! I couldn’t be more excited to share the news that all my hard work and hustling is finally paying off for this impatient girl…..but I’m also nervous! The last time I “interviewed” for a job was ten years ago! But I also believe I didn’t just come by these interviews by sending in a resume and waiting for the phone to ring….because I didn’t wait. I’ve been bustin’ my arse every day looking for “opportunity!“ I’ve seen the crowds down at the Work Force Pinellas Center…and I can tell they’ve been at it a while. We all have to GO FOR IT! Find the energy to LAUNCH yourself into a great job!

I’ve read that the average worker will change careers about 5 times in their life but you never know where that will take you. Admittedly, that can be scary. I’ve had friends who have worked in a specific “field” for a number of years, like me, but they don’t seem to realize that it’s their SKILLS and EXPERIENCE that can translate in a number of ways in a variety of fields. You are unique. NO ONE else can do things the way that you do them. We all need to hone in on exactly what our strengths are and figure out where that may be relevant elsewhere and then - and this is the big one - MARKET YOURSELF! If you don’t have the right words for your skills ask family and friends or call my friend Mandy Minor at http://www.jallanstudios.com. She can help you articulate your skills and translate those abilities into to something new!

You need to SHOW prospective employers what you can do. I’ve encouraged you to tell everyone you know that you’re looking for work but we really need to take it a step further in this economy. For me it’s a media package with radio & commercial demos, pictures, and hard copy examples of my work and research. It’s been a constant stream of communication with EVERYONE I can connect with in the industry. I’ve accepted guest spots on other radio shows! And most of the real “Players” I’ve found are networking on LinkedIN.com. You can post your work and your resume there too! And in fact, THIS Blog is also one of the ways I’m keeping my name out there and reminding hiring managers that I’m ready and looking for work and it DID get me some priceless attention recently! You hear stories about jobs that exist but managers can’t find qualified candidates? If they can’t find you, they can’t hire you. Put your resume on a T-shirt! Stand outside the company you want to work for with a sign and your resume! Do what you have to do to get yourself noticed. It will have to be something tailor-made for the type of job you’re looking for but NOW is the time to take a chance and take charge of your career! What do you have to lose?

So while I pick out what to wear, what to bring, and what to say in my Interviews I wanted to share with you some of the stories I’ve found that nail down the info for you!

More than 2,000 readers in two months! Today: How do YOU look on paper?

Today, the President will address Congress on the Job “situation.” There are apparently lots of roads and bridges that need to be built and about 1 million unemployed construction workers in the U.S. ready and willing to build them. That may give you hope if you know how to build a road or a bridge. I don’t. Recent Polls show the economy and jobs are the public's top concerns and I know that’s true, especially if you’re unemployed or on the verge of losing your job like so many.

For most of us it’s been a while since we last looked for a job. For me, it’s been ten years since my last job hunt and things have changed DRAMATICALLY! I remember it like it was yesterday, but it was actually one month before 9/11. The media landscape was rattled along with the rest of the world and I had to take a hard look at my career and ask, “Should I keep looking for a job in radio?” The answer was a definitive “YES!” I know without a doubt that I was meant to be a broadcaster. These days we have to ask, “Does the job you’ve worked hard at for years even exist anymore?” It’s clear things are evolving before our eyes. And it’s easy to fall out of practice of writing a contemporary resume and your interview skills may be a bit rusty. Did Social Networking even EXIST the last time you were looking for work? It’s really a different world out there so I’ve set out to find the answers to questions you may be asking.

I spoke to Mandy Minor of http://www.jallanstudios.com, a writing and design company, about crafting a stronger resume.

Corey: This is the toughest economy any of us have ever lived through. What's the best way to "stand out" on paper in the very large crowd of increasingly unemployed candidates who are finding it tough to compete for jobs with those who are currently employed?

Mandy: It used to be common that you could submit a resume and wait for the phone to ring – and it would. That just doesn’t happen anymore; too many people looking for work. So while it’s still important to have a resume that showcases what you can do for the potential employer, it’s even more important to network and get comfortable with using technology in your job search. The Internet is ripe with articles on using Twitter, LinkedIn, and even Facebook to ferret out opportunities. And a good resume writer is now also a career coach who will have tips and ideas you can leverage to maximize your search

Corey: Most people change careers at least 5 times in their lifetime. What advice would you give to someone who is trying to move into a new field?

Mandy: The fact that people change careers so often – and it’s totally true – should make any job seeker feel better about their varied past. The trick is to focus on specific projects and accomplishments and how they benefited past employers. Most skill sets are useful in any industry. What architect doesn’t need project managers and sales people? What medical sales company doesn’t need associates with great follow-up and client relations? Chances are your skill set is going to be useful in a number of industries and positions

Corey: You write a lot of resumes and cover letters for other people. Why would someone hire someone else to write their resume?

Mandy: There are so many reasons! : )
a. Resume writing is a balance of skill, experience, and psychology that you don’t know – nor should you. You go to specialists all the time for help with things you need only occasionally (oil changes, haircuts, medical treatment); resume writing is no different.

b. When you use a resume writer you’re saving yourself a ton of time. I’ve talked to people who have spent weeks trying to get their resume just right. Within seven days I’ve got their resume, cover letter, and interview follow-up letter done, and they can now focus on finding opportunities that are right for them.

c. Perspective. Writing a resume is most definitely a “forest for the trees” issue. I’m not sure how well my resume would turn out if I wrote it, simply because I’m too close to the situation and too emotionally involved to be impartial. Usually when you’re writing your resume it’s because you have to. You’re feeling pressured, maybe a little insecure, and pressed for time. A good resume writer not only get you the documents you need, but takes all of that away. I’ve had clients who were totally stressed out and feeling like unworthy candidates do a 180 in the self-confidence department when they saw how much they had accomplished in their careers. Only a third party can get to that level with you

Corey: Are you seeing different types of jobs open up in this economy that people in disappearing fields may be a good fit for? Where are the jobs?

Mandy: Solid skill sets are always going to be in demand; the trick is figuring out how to position yours so that it’s the skills that are the focus, not the industries where you used them. But it’s never a bad idea to keep your ear to the ground of what’s up-and-coming in career demands. Medical is hiring, and sales is almost always a good bet. I regularly post articles about hiring industries, specific job openings, and other useful career stuff on our Facebook page. Just go to Facebook and search for “J Allan Resume Studios.”
According to Mandy, here are some tips anyone can use to strengthen their resume:
a. Have an opening statement that’s an easily-read core competencies section that focuses more on what you can do for the employer and less on you.

b. Create a separate section for awards and recognitions to ensure they see that you’ve materially contributed to the success of past employers, and sections for trainings and community service to show off your well-roundedness.

c. Use numbers to quantify your achievements, i.e. how many quotes did you formulate in a month, and how many were accepted? Things like that.

d. Never badmouth anyone or any entity. I know what someone means when they say, “Excel in areas and in environments where other associates fail” but it sounds too brag-y.

e. Downplay entrepreneurial experience because many employers are scared business owners will leave once the economy picks up. Portray this kind of experience in a light that’s more “employee” that “boss.”

f. Your resume needs to be two pages maximum. It seems like a daunting tasks but is eminently do-able.

g. Implement keywords that show up in job descriptions as close to the top of your resume as possible, say in a career summary or core competencies section. This helps your resume get past ATS (applicant tracking software), the scanning software that many resumes meet before a person reviews them.

Thanks, Mandy! We’ll put your experience and advice into practice.

Keep the faith!

You want to work so WHERE are the jobs?!?!

There was some hope that the President and Congress would put aside their bickering and figuring out the problem with unemployment yesterday but it turns out they can’t even agree on a DATE to talk about it! Finding a job in this difficult economy is definitely…difficult. August is a very slow month for most businesses so you can be glad that it’s over and OUT! But I haven’t slowed down the networking and barrage of emails and resumes being sent out any time I hear of a potential opening. Neither should you! This week alone three MAJOR job openings came to light and I’m on it! It’s a numbers game and as most have reminded me, “Unemployment is temporary!”

A colleague and friend recommended that I “beef up” my LinkedIN profile. My first thought was, “That’s just for business types?!” But it’s not. If you need a job and you want to connect with other people who are doing what you’re doing, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIN are a vital resource for you right now. LinkedIN puts your resume online and connects you easily to the players in your industry. Sign up and start making your network work for YOU. This week, with a simple tweet, a consultant took notice and asked for my resume! I’m telling you, Social Media will get you noticed today.

Part of the problem for the unemployed is finding the jobs to apply for! Ask everyone if they know of something you may be suitable for. And don’t be deterred by the email that goes unanswered. People are busy and hiring new employees always seems like a last priority. Keep your name out there and top of mind.

So where are the jobs? Here is a link to a recent Inc. Magazine article covering the Top Ten Job Creators: http://www.inc.com/ss/2011-inc-5000-top-10-job-creators#0 And a recent article from The St. Petersburg Times highlights four companies that are hiring in Tampa Bay: http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/article1186993.ece

It’s not what you know but WHO you know that’s going to get you the job. Continue to make noise and start reaching out to everyone and anyone that may help you land that job. That much isn’t news but the methods that will help you land a job are changing. In next week’s Blog I talk to a professional resume writer. She has some great advice for you to help you make your resume stand OUT and land you the job.

Until then….keep the faith!

Need a Pep-Talk?

At a certain point, we all need a little inspiration, motivation, and perspective. Yesterday was one of those days for me. Yesterday wasn’t a good day. Some days everything catches up with you and you just have to run for cover. The universe must’ve know I was going to take a beating on Wednesday because I started writing this Blog earlier in the week. As it turns out, I may have written my own pep-talk!

The first months after you’ve lost a job can be an emotional see-saw! One minute you’re loving the freedom of making your own schedule; sleeping in and networking like crazy. The next you’re counting spare change and wondering what you’ll do when your savings runs out! The longer your status as “unemployed” continues the deeper you need to dig but you find out what you’re made of. I’d forgotten just how tough it can be so my hat goes off to you if you’ve been on the sidelines awhile. There haven’t been any major changes in the way I’m living (yet) as I’ve made the decision to keep living my life and reach for my goals. Not having a job has allowed me to reevaluate what I want to do, make a plan, and START DOING IT! Sometimes when you’re in a job long enough or working with people who aren’t passionate about what you do you can lose focus. Surrounding myself with people that have been supportive and professionals who are cheering me on is giving me energy and I’m feeding off of it! I’m focused.

The next stage of your life is sometimes dropped on your doorstep and you can feel a little helpless when it’s not in your control or it wasn‘t your choice. That’s life. But that’s the time to TAKE control and make things happen! Chances are you won’t be successful in something you’re not passionate about so it’s time to remember what it is that invigorates you and pour your energy into it. What do YOU love doing? I love broadcasting. Always have. Always will. I know without a doubt I was meant to do this and that‘s why I have confidence and energy and enthusiasm for my next gig.

I’m reminded of the “Last Lecture” given by Dr. Randy Pausch: a smart, grounded guy with lofty dreams who found out that he had Pancreatic Cancer in the prime of his life. If you need inspiration watch this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncoSRKoU6GQ Sadly, Dr. Pausch lost his cancer battle in July of 2008, but I took this lecture to heart. It puts everything in perspective for me.

I’ve never wasted much time on people who told me I couldn’t do something. What do they know? They’re holding you back! No doubt about it, being in a job you hate or unemployed will have very tough moments. So today I’m refocused on the things that I know I’m good at. What we all need to remember is that “the brick walls that are in our way are there for a reason. They’re not there to keep us out. They’re there to give us a way to show how much we want it!“ I think it’s ok to expect obstacles. You know that nothing worth having is easy. You just have to find the strength to push those obstacles out of your way and you CAN do it.

Until next time…Keep the faith!
Corey

WHY ME?!?!

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." ~Thomas Edison

You know what? “Why Me” is a question I never asked when I was fired. I’ve been fired before and I‘ve chosen an unstable industry in an unstable time. Almost 2 out of every 10 Floridians are out of work so why NOT me? I’m not taking it personally. I’m looking at unemployment as a new lease on life and the opportunity I needed to spread my wings!

With the U.S. Economy feeling like a roller-coaster, you’re not alone if you think there’s nothing left to do than take your future by the reigns. You can’t rely on corporate America to pull you up if you’re unemployed. You have to create work for yourself and that’s why I’m on the hustle.

I don’t know if I’d say I’m “reinventing” myself but I’m certainly finding that being open to new and different opportunities is opening doors for me. It’s time for a big change and I’m ready and excited about it! Video work? Yes! TV presenter? I’d love to! Radio/Webcast hostess? Sure! For me, trying new things is freeing and invigorating.

As it turns out, many people are leaving corporate America behind in search of something more fulfilling and looking to do things they’ve long put off. Good for you! It’s exciting, isn’t it? Even if you are still gainfully employed, you may want to think about starting something new that may bring you a little cash on the side. I don’t know why I waited this long to create a blog or website and try to diversify myself. Relying on one source for an income doesn’t seem to be working for anyone anymore. I really admire those that go out on their own and make things happen. These days it seems like a smarter thing to do even if it‘s a tremendous challenge! A wise new friend just told me this week, “YOU are in charge of your future!” Thanks, Skip Mahaffey! I believe that I am! After all, I’ve never been the type to sit by the phone and wait for it to ring. ;)

Until next time, keep the faith!
Corey Dylan

Firing good people is stupid - just ask the experts!

While it’s stressful not knowing where my next paycheck is coming from I’ve worked in this business long enough and learned the hard way that you have to have money saved. Money comes and money goes in everyone’s life and when it goes, you’d better be prepared. The problem today is that we have to be prepared to be out of work longer than ever but most Americans don’t even have $1000 in the bank to cover an emergency expense!!! (1)

You’re not the only one in debt though. Most of the big radio companies are millions, even billions of dollars in debt because they too were living on credit and they continue to drive it into a ditch. As my colleague, Mason Dixon, said in this week’s St. Petersburg Times article, “radio ate itself” and it continues to chew away, much to my dismay. (2)

Modern management thinks the answer to long-term problems is layoffs. Look how much money we’re saving!!! Oops. Short-sighted, boys. The latest collection of research says that reducing staff means INCREASED costs long-term, not to mention you‘re burning out the employees you still have. Read more about it here:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/collections/201107/is-the-economic-downturn-in-our-heads/the-american-way-unemployment

Layoffs don’t increase profits long term. And morale? The people I left behind are living in fear of losing their jobs. Many have also confided that they’ve finally had it with the “business” of radio. Their hearts are no longer in it and I know you can‘t win if you don‘t believe in what you‘re trying to achieve. While my future is uncertain I’m actually still really excited about radio and the media! I have a renewed love for what I do and I can’t wait to see what’s next. I’ve talked to people who love what they do too and are at the top of their game. I’m certain that good things are ahead for you too but you have to play on the right team. Is your Pied Piper leading you down the right path? If they think layoffs are the answer it’s likely they’re shooting themselves in the foot. .

Everyone asks me, ‘Did you know they were going to flip formats?’ Not exactly, but I was in a situation where I was told that I was the only one that cared about the radio station and for that reason the station suffered. Does any team stand a chance when the only one that cares is the cheerleader? I really appreciate the support 101.5 The Point’s listeners have given me during this time. I’m sorry that you feel as if no one cared about you and your love for the 80s/90s genre. We had the most passionate, intelligent audience I’ve ever experienced in radio.

More than a month into my unemployment I can honestly say I’m enjoying it. I’ve been here before and there’s no use in worrying about things you can’t control. If you use the time wisely to improve your skills, network, and put out your feelers for a new job you don’t have time to feel sorry for yourself and you‘ll land the next job more quickly. I’m enjoying the time spent with friends, the vacation I took to celebrate my birthday, and I love talking to the best in the business. So many doors are opening and I’m the kind of person who loves to try new things! I think you have to flexible too. Sometimes life gives you a little “shove.” Why not enjoy the ride and see where it takes you? It might be the best experience of your life and you just might land your dream job!

Keep the Faith!

Networking IS working!

Most of the day-to-day stuff I’ve shared with you on my Corey Dylan Facebook: I’ve communicated via email with a couple of Programmers in town but they’re busy and in no hurry to hire anyone but they‘ve been helpful. I’ve sent emails to people I’ve dealt with on a professional level before and some of them must be really busy - or at least too busy to even humor me with a reply? The good news is that mostly what I’ve encountered are SO many pros who are willing to help me, someone whom some of them have never met personally! Losing my job has ironically meant gaining lots of friends! My resume is in the hands of TV station managers, Shopping Network peeps, Radio Markets near and far, and even local sports heroes. I’m encouraged by the support I’m getting, not only inside the industry, but by the cheerleaders along the way to my next job.

Searching for a job when you’re on a timeline is at times terrifying and other times exhilarating! I’ve also heard from those of you who are in the same boat and frustrated with the process of looking for a job after months of unemployment. My advice? Make some noise! Reach out to everyone you can on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIN. Create a Blog. Stand on street corners! Only because I was posting on FB about my job loss did I learn an old classmate works at Sirius XM! If you ask for help you’ll be amazed how many people offer their help. Employers are expecting you to simply send in your resume and go away quietly if you don’t hear from them. You have to find a way to get noticed. It’s very difficult to stand out on paper but there are some Do’s and Don’ts to make note of:

http://msn.careerbuilder.com/Article/MSN-1217-Cover-Letters-Resumes-13-Most-Overused-Résumé-Phrases/?SiteId=cbmsnhp41217&sc_extcmp=JS_1217_home>1=23000

Now, if you’re really tired of sitting on the sidelines and really want the job you’re going to have to do something creative. I read about a woman who put her marketing resume on a T-SHIRT that got her noticed, and got her the marketing job. Smart! Play to your strengths and make sure EVERBODY you know knows that you’re looking for work! Try new things and meet new people. Here are some things other people are trying:

Losing my job has made me laser-focused and doors ARE opening! I’m maintaining a schedule, riding my bike to the gym to get in better shape, getting my rest and taking care of business! OK, I might be sleeping a little later and having some wild nights out too but you’re your own best agent so make it happen! Networking is going to have you working again soon!

Busy Body

This is a Blog about losing your job, finding a new one, and everything that happens in between.

Being unemployed gives you plenty of time, but of course, little money. Since I lost my job July 1st my time has been spent replying to hundreds of emails, writing some of my own to prospective employers and numerous contacts all over the country, and luckily, with family who flew into town for a week. I suppose I’m in denial about the fact that I’m unemployed because I’ve been so busy. But I realized that time spent with the people you love most and those who are the most supportive give you the boost you need tackle each new day with gusto. The people who are supportive in your life are really all that matter and they’re going to help you land your next job.

With little money expected to come in after you lose a job, finding your next job is priority #1. The last time I lost a job was right before 9/11 and my unemployment lasted 10 months. During that time I was busy with a couple part-time jobs and sending my resume to over one hundred prospective employers. This go-round I’ve found Facebook to be invaluable for putting me in touch with literally hundreds of contacts. Like any business, it’s not what you know but WHO you know that will help you land that next job. Reach out to as many people as you can and tell them you’re eager to work. Put yourself out there! Tell the world you’re looking for work! Chances are, that’s your best bet to land a great new job.

I’m open to new opportunities and I have a good feeling about the next chapter of my life. Everyone I know who’s ever been “fired” from a job lands a better one eventually. I’m energized by the people who are sending emails of support but also actively helping me find my next job! It’s been an amazing experience so far and I can‘t wait to try new things.

When you’re unemployed your new job is finding a job. While searching for opportunity and sending out resumes is important, you can only spend so much time each day on what seems like a limited exercise. It’s also a good idea to use the extra time you have while you’re unemployed to make your self a better candidate for the next big thing! Is there something you’re curious about or have always wanted to try? Broaden your horizons! MIT, the well-respected Massachusetts Institute of Technology, offers FREE lectures and course material on everything from Photography to Technology:

http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm

And who says you’re not on vacation until the next opportunity comes along? Before I lost my job I had already paid for a cruise in August to celebrate my birthday. I’m not going to let a job loss stop me from going! Maybe you too can look at your unemployed status as an opportunity to TRAVEL! Putting yourself in a new environment combined with your skills may actually help you land a free trip or use the time you now have to do something you’ve always wanted to do. Here’s an inspiring article I found from Travel & Leisure about vacations that are a good use of your time and won’t cost you a bundle when you‘re unemployed:

http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/top-vacations-for-the-newly-unemployed

If you’re single and want to meet new people you can even find dates for FREE:

http://www.plentyoffish.com/

And one of the best freebies in Tampa Bay is a stroll through the Tampa Bay Museum of Art which offers FREE admission every Friday, from 4pm until 8pm, for “Art On The House!” They have pieces from some of my favorites on display: Chuck Close and Dale Chihuly.

http://www.tampamuseum.org/

Times are tough in the job market, no doubt about it. But I KNOW that there is opportunity out there for all of us. We’ll either find a great job or create our own because we have something of value to offer the next employer. I consider this chapter of my life another adventure and I NEVER turn down an adventure!

Keep the faith,
Corey Dylan

Cheap is CHIC!

This is a Blog about losing your job, finding a new one, and everything that happens in between.

It’s been about a week since I became an unemployed statistic. Unfortunately, 1,300 state employees joined me this week as they were put out of work by the new Florida State Budget. Getting that news is never easy. Uncertainty makes us uncomfortable. But I made a promise to myself that the most important thing I could do is to maintain a positive attitude and make the most of this time. I can also say from experience, and because I heard it in a Bob Marley song, 3 Little Birds - "Every little thing gonna be alright!”

Your first concern after you lose your job is providing for yourself and your family when you won‘t be getting a paycheck in the near future. You need a plan, as do I, so I’ve been crunchin’ the numbers.

After researching what money you may have coming to you in the form of unemployment wages, severance, unclaimed money, loose change in the couch, etc that I detailed in Blog #1, it’s time to figure out ways to cut down on the money you’re spending on the necessities. Some experts will tell you to stop eating out or freeze your credit cards. Obviously! But it’s the big bills that you need to figure out how to cut back on and I promise you the following will save you about $300 per month!

The most painless way I’ve ever found to save money was inspired by watching “Oprah.” Sorry about that guys, but this REALLY works as I tested it out myself. When you’re not using an appliance like the alarm clocks, hair dryer, and especially the cable box, UNPLUG IT! Appliances that are plugged in drain about 40% of the energy even when they’re not “on” and those cable boxes and anything with a clock display are the worst offenders. Maybe your dad yelled at you to shut off the lights when you were a kid so this is obvious to you but I did this for one month about a year ago and saved almost $100 on my electric bill! I live in a small house and figured I would save some money but I was floored that I saved so much. I now make a point to unplug those suckers when not in use. My dad would be so proud! Savings = $100 per month.

You can’t live without food so that’s the next thing to tackle as it’s usually a big expense but this one takes a little bit more forethought. First you need to take your friends up on those offers for free drinks and dinner! Work them for sympathy! In the last week my friends have been very generous and supportive and I love them all! Otherwise, you can forget about eating out, fast food and processed foods. They’re bad for you anyway and you wanted to lose 10 pounds, right? The average family of 4 spends $727 a month on food! I found the article below from Money.CNN.com that details a smarter way to shop for food and save about $200 per month:
http://money.msn.com/saving-money/how-to-eat-when-you-are-really-broke-weston.aspx?ocid=msnfacebook

I also recommend this article from Cooking Light for budget recipes - Feed 4 for $10: http://www.cookinglight.com/food/everyday-menus/healthy-budget-recipes-00400000056656/

Savings = $200 per month.

Many loan companies and credit unions are working with you if you have a loan you can’t pay at this time. A friend of mine called her credit union, explained that she was unemployed and worked out a deal to pay only the interest on the loan until she finds a job and can pick up the full payment. Now is the perfect time to call up your lien holders! You have nothing to lose and money to save!

This Blog is a collective effort so if your pink slip experience has taught you a valuable lesson please share it with us! You still fill your days so next Thursday’s Blog is all about FREE stuff - everything from online classes to freebies in Tampa Bay! You can’t stop living, right?

Keep the faith!

Now serving customer #13,900,001

This is a Blog about losing your job, finding a new one, and everything that happens in between.

On Friday, July 1st, 2011 I lost a job I love. Word got out. The phone rang off the hook. I was flooded with text messages and emails of support. I’m not bitter, I’m motivated and energized to land the next great gig and start my next adventure!

My brother once said “The only thing worse than NOT having a job is having one!” All jokes aside, the purpose of this Blog isn’t to make light of the fact that we are living in hard times with record unemployment in our lifetime. My intention is to build a community and support network that looks for the silver lining in a tough situation and highlights ways to make your life easier during a difficult time. I’m also going to share the details of my job search since so many friends have asked me to keep them up to date!

You are not alone. I’m right there with you. I love broadcasting and it’s what I’ve done professionally since I was 18 years old. In that time I’ve made more friends than one could hope for in all walks of life. I’ve created this Blog because communicating with interesting people with individual interests and unique qualities is what I do. It’s in my blood and having this outlet serves a cathartic purpose for me. I also want to share the details of my search and resources I find with you!

As of May 2011, the unemployment rate in Florida is 10.8%. This number does not take into account people who want to work full-time but have only found part-time work. It also does not include the unemployed that have given up hope and stopped looking for work all together. The actual unemployment number is really closer to 17% in the Sunshine State. If you’re not unemployed, you know someone that is.

First thing’s first. You may have some money coming to you. Your eligibility for collecting unemployment benefits depends primarily upon the type of employment you’ve held and the reason for separation from your most recent job. You may collect unemployment benefits if you are either unemployed or partially employed. You may be able to file online.
